GLAD TOMORROW

Diyi Youth Arts, a non-profit organization based in Brisbane, Australia, empowers indigenous youth through creative exploration and storytelling. The production “Glad Tomorrow” unfolds the narrative of three Indigenous students transitioning from their communities in Queensland to a city boarding school, showcased at Brisbane Powerhouse Arts.

As the Art Director, the set design drew inspiration from Pointillism, an Aboriginal art form tied to story, itinerary, and site. Utilizing cylindrical volumes, actors could transform the stage to represent various
scenarios, embodying different locations throughout the play. These metallic, lightweight volumes, painted in pale blue, white, and terracotta, symbolized water, sky, and earth. Their versatility allowed for fluid representation of diverse theatrical passages: river, classroom, park, airport, etc. With the primary goal of minimizing production costs, I visited the Brisbane recycled point to source potential materials and objects for repurposing in crafting the set design.

Complementing the set, a sound and light installation enhanced each scene, fostering integration between the audience, stage, and storyline. The dynamic interplay of light and sound served to accentuate and define each moment, creating a seamless connection with the narrative.
